It’s an exciting day! Pinterest just announced that they’ve decided to allow affiliate links!
In the past, they removed affiliate links from Pinterest because spammers were abusing them. Fortunately, they were able to strengthen their spam detection system and allow affiliate links once again. Woot!
To make way for these changes, Pinterest is making minor updates to their acceptable use policy, which they’ll start rolling out to all affiliate networks over the coming weeks.
What does this mean for you? If you use affiliate links on your site, you don’t have to do anything differently – just keep on Pinning as usual.
If you haven’t been using them because they kept getting removed, rest assured that now you can!
Pinterest has seen explosive growth over the past few years and now ranks as the fourth most popular social network behind Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The site’s 70 million users have created a staggering one billion boards and fifty billion pins.
As an emerging social network, there are many reasons your brand should consider joining the growing community of pinners, including:
- Engagement with key demographics. Two important demographics that are strongly represented on Pinterest are: women and millennials. Women make up 85% of the Pinterest audience, with 55% of women 18-54 using the platform. And one third of millennials are on Pinterest.
- Action-oriented audience. Pinterest users tend to spend money. They are 10% more likely to make a purchase on an e-commerce site than visitors referred from other social networks and they spend twice as much as visitors referred from Facebook.
- Insights into what resonates. If you find that certain products are getting pinned much more than others, those might be products you should feature on the homepage of your site or do a special promotion around.
